Grass To Grace: How Don Jazzy Discovered 20-Year-Old Singer Boy Spyce

One of the biggest record labels in Africa, Mavin Records yesterday unveiled a new artist by the stage name of Boy Spyce.

The owner of the label, Don Jazzy, through his Twitter handle, introduced his new artist to the world. He wrote, ‘Guys help me follow and welcome to the Mavin family @boyspyce’.

Boy Spyce also announced his signing in a tweet. ‘I feel blessed and elated to be going on this journey with you by my side’, he wrote.

Few hours later, his debut project was dropped, an EP titled ‘Boy Spyce’.

So, How Was He Discovered?

The story of Boy Spyce is an inspiring one. ‘Grass to Grace’, maybe, is the right phrase to define it.

He was born Ugbekile David Osemeke. He’s from Edo state, Nigeria.

David had been an underground artist as far back as 2020 or thereabouts, releasing songs and freestyles on his social media handles.

March 24, 2021 he freestyled Wizkid’s hit song Essence and posted a video to Twitter.

Luckily for him, people loved his freestyle and retweeted it a number of times. In a blink of an eye, bloggers shared it and it trended across all social media platforms.

Sometime after then, nothing was heard of Boy Spyce again. He released one or two freestyles on Twitter after doing Essence and he disappeared from social media.

However, yesterday (April 15) he reappeared but, this time, as a Mavin artist with a bright future.

The reason for his sudden disappearance is best explained like this: Scouted by Mavin Records shortly after his viral video, he joined the Records’ academy as a general rule of the label that their artists must be trained at Mavin Academy before introducing them to members of the public.

It is even evident that he was enrolled at Mavin Academy in this Don Jazzy’s post introducing him:

We wish Boy Spyce good luck!
