CELEBRITIES GIVE-AWAY: Another form of the rich oppressing the poor or a means of giving back?
Giving is one of the acts of kindness that humans do to show or demonstrate care for another person. Even the religious books back it up that whoever does this, shall receive favour from God and in turn be blessed also, most especially if it was done in secret.
More so, many marketing agencies, multinational companies etc. since inception of marketing have been using this act as a means of promoting sales, creating awareness for brands or products through what they usually tag “sales promotion”.
In recent times, it has become a means or an act use to generate publicity, generate bants, follower-ship by many Nigeria celebrities, social media influencers among others. It has shifted from been an act of generosity or goodwill to a means of announcing new music, release dates, etc.
Prominent user of this act is Davido, beginning from asking people to drop their aza to create awareness for his release of the same name. Tunde Ednut’s “give away” to generate bants or say clout for his parties and generate followers. DONJ AZZY’S #TalkToTheDon in recent times to mention a few.
Now Tekno is using the same format to re-enter the industry after his absence since September last year and also create publicity for video of his new song Agege. By giving away 50k to 50 people.
It’s is important to note that Nigeria was last year rated as the country with the highest poverty rate in the world by IMF. And statistics also show that only 5% of graduate produced yearly get jobs each year. So are the celebs just exploring the poor financial state of fellow Nigerians or just trying to give back to the people who made them who they are.
