If Naira Marley doesn’t drop another hit song, many marlians will hate him” – Joey Akan

Nigerian journalist and music critic , Joey Akan has revealed that Naira Marley and Zlatan Ibile could loose fans if they fail to drop a hit as zanku era is coming to an end.

The journalist took to his Instagram page and Twitter handle to make this known. He strongly believes that the era for the zanku and lamba sounds are coming to an end and might kick Naira Marley and Zlatan Ibile amidst others out of the game.

In his words,

Watch how people begin to denounce their Marlian pledges. Not because they hate Naira Marley and his movement. No. It’ll become stale too. Music is the nucleus of that movement, and if Zanku goes, and nothing special replaces it, it’ll obey the law of Natural Selection.”

“What will save Marlian nation from disbanding or moving away from the fore, is if Naira Marley drops another hit with the new wave. If he doesn’t, the bandwagon will slowly lose members. And they will hang around like minions, waiting for another king. Someone with a fresh wave.”

“That’s why fandom is an exercise in futility. It’s always in flux, forcing you to adapt your pleasure centers to new cultural stimulus. Just as in life, at some point, you will lose the zeal to move. Pop Inertia will become a force too strong. And you will alight and find peace.”

And you will alight and find peace. Look at the old hip hop heads stuck with boom bap. They dropped off the bus, and remain stuck in that era. At some point, it happens to all of us. Short-term, long-term. We always find our hill to die on. Marley definitely won’t be yours. He’s enjoyed a short reign. On to the next one.
