Is Covid-19 Really a Major Health Problem in Africa?

Published

on

Without an iota of doubt, the new wave of Covid19 called Omicron is fast spreading around the world’s population and as usual, Africans have the chance to get vaccinated, which isn’t a bad thing but the bitter truth is, Is Covid really our major health problem in Africa?

I write this article with lots of Animosity and disdain towards our African government and the ignorance often portrayed by fellow Africans. It is quite evident that the level of seriousness and attention is given to Covid19 is a result of what is happening in Europe and America.

These sets of civilized people are suffering the effect of these viruses more and so the Exigency is transferred to African countries when in reality, Africans are facing a more debilitating effect from Malaria, Typhoid, Tuberculosis, and Cholera.

You don’t expect a white man to take the fight against these killer diseases more seriously than those suffering from it. We have seen instances, where The whites had gotten exposed to Malaria before like the case of the Australian woman who got amputated as a result of the effect of Malaria.

This is the same illness we take for granted. If exposed to foreigners, they’ll die in their Thousands to these same illnesses. Why haven’t Africans found a lasting solution to Mosquitoes? In fact, an average Nigerian spends over #20, 000 or more yearly treating Malaria depending on its severity. When we have Billions of dollars donated yearly to better our systems. We have Medical research institutions who are supposed to champion these struggles but are they funded? or are they even monitored after being funded?

Just recently, Real Madrid’s new acquisition David Alaba donated over 13.3 million to kick against open defecation which is one of the reasons Typhoid and other diseases have become a recurring decimal in our health and daily hygiene lives.

In July 2021, FG of Nigeria received a staggering $890m grant to combat HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria. Till now, no serious program has been implemented to curb the menace of these diseases. No Mass Fumigation program for the decimation of Mosquitoes. No health care program done bring the free treatment of Malaria or subsidization of such drugs. No thorough research was done to make Malaria vaccination accessible to the people.

The Covid19 Vaccines were given as donations from different Foreign health organizations. For how long do we keep waiting for Global help to make a move on our own key health challenges? If we can Tackle Malaria, Typhoid, Tuberculosis, and Cholera the way we tackled Polio in Africa. Covid19 is a peripheral challenge. As these diseases are a lot more Perilous.

However, our government will once again be our major undoing, as they’ll rather spend billions on Healthcare abroad than invest in a health sector that has long become a Debacle.

An African will boast of getting fully Vaccinated and end up treating Malaria and Typhoid the next day. A disease capable of claiming his life. If we don’t put in the same energy in eradicating these diseases, it is of no use making a Covid vaccination compulsory.
