“Essence Deserves Song Of The Year” – British Model Naomi Campbell Slams Grammys, Advocates Creation Of Afrobeats Category
British top model Naomi Campbell slammed the Grammys for snubbing Wizkid’s Grammy-nominated album and single—”Made In Lagos” and “Essence.”
Wizkid was nominated for Best Global Music Album and Best Global Music Performance respectively, but he lost both awards.
In an Instagram post to her 12 million+ followers, Naomi Campbell shared details of the incredible records Wizkid made with his album, Made In Lagos. Some of these records include: first African song (Essence) to go platinum and double platinums in the US; longest-charting African album of all time on Billboard World Music Charts; and longest-charting African song (Essence) on Billboard Hot 100.
Besides sharing the records, she wrote a lengthy caption under the post as well as tagged the Grammys.
“To my brother @wizkidayo, Made In Lagos was beyond a phenomenal album!! Winner without DOUBT!!” Naomi Campbell wrote. “You’re the King of the people who have brought Afrobeats mainstream, that means more than any academy of any sort.”
Asking the Grammys to give Afrobeats better treatment, the supermodel said the change of the word “World” to “Global” is inadequate to celebrate other genres; instead, all popular genres (Afrobeats) deserve to be nominated in main categories, such as Song of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Album of the Year.
At the 64th Grammys, Wizkid was defeated by Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo and Pakistani singer Arooj Aftab.
