In this article, we present to you the Top 10 Best Songwriters in Nigeria in 2023. It was very hard making this list, for there are many amazing songwriters in the industry.

When some people think of Nigerian music (Afrobeats), they assume that not a lot of attention is given to the writing of songs. That’s far from the truth! There are a lot of amazing songwriters in the Nigerian music industry. However, in this list, we shall rank the Top 10 Best Songwriters in Nigeria in 2023. Enjoy!

10. Peruzzi

Peruzzi is one of the best songwriters in the industry. He earned himself a spot in Davido’s record label, DMW, due to his natural writing abilities. He has written and composed many hit songs for Davido, including “Fia”, “Assurance”, and “Unavailable”.

9. Adekunle Gold

Adekunle Gold is a great songwriter too. He has switched genres from Alté to Afro-pop and is still able to create good songs. There’s no iota of lazy songwriting in his songs and albums. He’s painstaking and delivers all the time!

8. Omah Lay

Over the past few months, Omah Lay has become a hot topic of discussion for his writing of the hit song “Soso” from his debut album “Boy Alone”. For someone to have written that many great songs off his debut album is quite a feat; hopefully he will continue to create great music for years to come!

7. Johnny Drille

In terms of musical talent, Johnny Drille is really an all-rounder. He sings, plays multiple instruments, writes, composes, and produces. Just recently, he worked on the collaboration project “Chapter X” for his label, Mavin Records. With credits for solos and collaborations, Johnny is eating well off royalties.

6. Fireboy DML

Showing his writing skills since his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps’, Fireboy DML is one of Nigeria’s most promising lyricists. He is credited for writing all his songs. He has a good command of the English language and is well vast in poetry.

5. Tay Iwar

Tay Iwar is another lyrical powerhouse who began creating music at the age of 14. His style of music is exceptional with Afro-fusion that perfectly blends various elements from Classic RnB to Afrobeats. He’s also a ghostwriter for many renowned Nigerian music stars. He is credited for writing songs off Wizkid’s ‘Made In Lagos’ and ‘More Love, Less Ego’ albums.

4. BNXN (Buju)

BNXN, formerly known as Buju, is known as the mind behind many hit songs in Nigeria. He has a knack for making any song he’s featured in a hit. This is partly thanks to his songwriting skills His writing and composing are a part of what has made him so successful in a very short time. He is responsible for writing songs like “In My Mind”, “Bad Since ‘97” and “Loose Emotions” and for co-writing songs like “Feeling” (with Ladipoe) “Cold Outside” (with Timaya), and “Mood” (with Wizkid).

3. Asa

It should come as no surprise that Asa is on this list. With over 100 writing credits to her name, Asa is a force to be reckoned with. Her evergreen song “Fire On The Mountain” is undoubtedly one of the most impressive to come out of the country. She also released her latest album ‘V’ in 2022, which was critically acclaimed. She has spent several years in the industry and is still at the top of her game when it comes to penning down good songs.

2. Burna Boy

As many fans know, Burna Boy writes almost all of his own music. He’s such an amazing songwriter with an impressive number of writing credits in his own discography. It’s his writing abilities that make him stand out amongst other Afrobeats artists and that partly won him a Grammy award for Best Global Album. Just last year, Burna Boy wrote and performed “Alone”, one of the best songs in Black Panther Wakanda Forever Album.

1. Brymo

Well known for his songwriting and production skills, Brymo has led a successful career for several years now, and he has no plans to slow down. He has written and produced many hits for himself and for others. He has one of the finest discographies in the Nigerian music industry. In 2023, he exhibited Mansa, his eleventh studio album and debut as a sonic artist, at KAP Hub. Apart from music, he has released three books: Oriri’s Plight (2018), Verses (2020) and The Bad Tooth (2022).
