Album Review: Wande Coal’s ‘Legend Or No Legend’ Is An Undercooked Meal

Nigerian Afropop legend Wande Coal released his new album Legend Or No Legend recently. Below is the review of the album!

Wande Coal is finally back with a new album Legend Or No Legend after several years since his last album. The new album dropped May 17, and few hours later it reached number one on Nigeria Apple Music before it was unseated by Joeboy’s new album Body & Soul which now holds the position.

The title of the album sounds like a question, and at the same time, like Wande trying to prove himself to despisers arguing about his legend status in the genre. This is nothing new if you’re an ardent Twitter user.

Let’s move from the title conversation (Wande Coal is a legend!) and get into the songs on the album.

Wande Coal opens the album with ‘Nobody Holy’, a proper album intro which could have been, however, much better had the songwriting part been given more attention. As a matter of factly, this is the case with all of the 13 tracks on the album. There is presence of bad writing.

The whole songs on the album sound like freestyles. There is evidence to prove it too – I watched a clip of Wande recording ‘Dues’, off the album, in the studio, and the whole song was done in one take. He was just freestyling to the beat.

While this is something Afrobeats artists normally do, it becomes boring if done repeatedly. Take for example, ‘Ebelebe’ featuring Wizkid sounds much like Wizkid’s ‘Anoti’. Sounding alike is one of the shortcomings of freestyling everytime.

‘Legend or No Legend’ fell short of my expectation. It was supposed to be Wande Coal’s effort in reminding listeners of the ability he possessed that made people revered him as a legend. Although the album reminded listeners of his talent, it didn’t do more than that. ‘Legend Or No Legend’ is an undercooked meal.

PS: my personal favorite off the album is ‘Streets’ featuring T-Pain. Wande Coal and T-Pain need to make more songs together. They sound very good!

The end.
