Why Would Davido Call Burna Boy A ‘New Cat?’ [Author’s Opinion]
Davido, on Thursday, June 8, 2023, turned Nigerian social media space into a debate ground with a new interview, in which he called Burna Boy one of the ‘new cats’ taking Afrobeats to another level internationally.
In the video, Davido said he and Wizkid were the first youngsters to blow in Nigeria and they paved the way for new cats like Burna Boy, Rema, Fireboy DML, Mayorkun, and Asake.
The controversial statement made by Davido has gone viral, particularly on Twitter, as Nigerian music lovers are debating whether Burna Boy should be in the ‘new cats’ category like Davido said or not.

Why would Davido call Burna Boy a new cat?
First, by ‘new cat’, what Davido meant is that Burna Boy is one of the new generation Afrobeats artists like Rema, Fireboy DML, Asake, and the rest. This simply means Davido considers Burna Boy as an artist who is on the same level as Rema, and not on the same level as him and Wizkid.
Davido calling Burna Boy a new cat may be a new response to their silent battle of supremacy. In Davido’s view, he was the first to be popping in Nigeria and outside before Burna Boy’s global rise in 2018 with the monster hit ‘Ye’.
But is Burna Boy really a ‘new cat’ like Davido say?
Burna Boy’s first official single was ‘Like To Party’ released in 2012. A year before then, Davido dropped his own first single ‘Back When’, and Wizkid dropped his own first, second, and third singles between 2010 and early 2011. That is, the three have been around for a very long time. For instance, Wizkid won the Best Rated award in 2011, Davido won him in 2012, and Burna Boy got a nomination in 2013.
However, it’s also true that Davido and Wizkid were more popular than Burna Boy in those days. But does lack of early fame like the other two make Burna Boy a new cat?

Davido is very wrong by calling burn boy a new cat he and wizkid being the first to blow up the music industry doesn’t mean that burna boy is a new cat cause burna boy has been in the music industry for a long time and he has contributed the music industry in Nigeria 🇳🇬 so my fact is that davido is just trying to make jest of Burna boy because burna boy is far way better him davido and burna boy have broken alot of record that he can never break abeg ajebutters to they to people wa never see suffer go con dey compare with people wa don chop, sleep, sweat suffer make burna boy no cath davido one on one abeg wiz kid I dey hail ooohhh
