ALBUM REVIEW: Asake’s ‘Work Of Art’ Is Rebirth Of His Debut Album

Asake's Work of art album review

Asake released his sophomore album in under 10 months that he dropped his debut album ‘Mr Money With The Vibe’. This is a review of Asake’s ‘Work Of Art’ album, released June 16, 2023.

On September 6, 2022, Asake dropped his debut album ‘Mr Money With The Vibe’ to critical acclaim. Before releasing the album, he had a crazy run with back-to-back, fire singles, which were all chart toppers in Nigeria and other African countries. Asake shook the Nigerian music industry in the whole 2022.

Moving forward, he announced ‘Work of Art’, coming a few weeks after announcing his O2 Arena show, taking place this year’s August. Could ‘Work of Art’ be an album released prematurely because he would need more songs to perform at the O2? But then, in the label Asake belongs to, YBNL, back-to-back album release is a trend.

On ‘Work of Art’, Asake is joined only by his label’s boss, Olamide, a skillful rapper and singer, on track 7 titled ‘Amapiano’ as he took full control of the remaining 13 tracks of the total 14-track album.

He opens the album with Fuji-inspired ‘Olorun’, meaning ‘God’ in Yoruba language. It is a spiritual song laced with in-depth lyrics and spiced with proverbial words. However, from ‘Awodi’ to the album’s outro, ‘Yoga’, Asake goes back-and-forth recreating the Amapiano sound on which his debut album was built.

Asake on ‘Work of Art’ seems like a stuck creative who made an album in a rush just to sell a show, neglecting his own artistic balance and listeners’ fulfilment. This is a rebirth of his debut album.
