Several albums were released in the first six months of 2023, here are our top 5 albums of the first half of 2023.
5. Joeboy – Body & Soul
Joeboy is well-known for his sound, which combines elements of R&B and Afropop. He crafts songs that are relevant to his audience by employing addictive rhythms, memorable melodies, and emotionally honest lyrics. This was demonstrated perfectly on his ground-breaking debut album titled Love & Light. And the new album Body & Soul further proves Joeboy’s kingship.
This album is a solid work of art, though it did not maintain the same message throughout, there are very great songs to listen to there as they showcase aesthetics and the melodies are infectious.
4. Seyi Vibez – Thy Kingdom Come
A 10 track album feature Phyno. Thy Kingdom Come is perhaps a continuation of Vibe Till Thy Kingdom Come. Seyi Vibez from these has shown he is a very serious artiste who is very serious with his work.
Although often classified as a Street-Hop musician, Seyi Vibez seems more like an Afro-Fusion fusion as he has mastered the art on mastering different genre of music to his Afrobeat. Surprisingly, the instrumentals he usually sing over were influenced by Afrobeat as well as other styles. The album provides a showcase for the singer-songwriter’s versatility as an artiste.
3. Omah Lay – Boy Alone Deluxe
Coming with a Deluxe edition is not easy, however Omah Lay was able to make the Boy Alone Deluxe edition make a very valid statement.
While a lot of afrobeat artistes want to sing about lewd lyrics, Omah Lay has harnessed his own sound and he has been given the term Afro depression. The singer sings about philosophy, psychology and pains. With six songs added to this deluxe version, Omah Lay maintained the theme of the album.
2. Asake – Work of Art
The album expands upon his previous work by integrating amapiano beats and basslines, shakers, and synths with guitars, saxophones, and violins. Among Nigerian musicians, Asake stands out for his innovative fusion of amapiano and Afropop, which he developed alongside his go-to producer-engineer Magicsticks.
Asake distinctive street-pop sound, which combines crowded backup vocals reminiscent of a choir with traditional Nigerian melodies and amapiano beats, has quickly established him as the most exciting new singer on the Nigerian pop industry.
