‘Calm Down’ Wins First-ever ‘Best Afrobeats Song’ Award At 2023 MTV VMAs
‘Calm Down’ has set a record as the first-ever song to win the newly created category of ‘Best Afrobeats Song’ at the MTV Video Music Awards, aka VMAs, held last night, September 12, in the US.
‘Calm Down’ won over other contending songs such as Wizkid featuring Ayra Starr’s ‘2 Sugar’, Davido featuring Musa Keys’ ‘Unavailbale’, Fireboy featuring Asake’s ‘Bandana’, Burna Boy’s ‘It’s Plenty’, amongst others.
Both of the winning artists, Rema and Selena Gomez, were present at the occasion, and delivered acceptance speeches after the VMAs announced ‘Calm Down’ winner of ‘Best Afrobeats Song’.
VMAs created the category on 3 August 2023. According to an article by Billboard, ‘Best Afrobeats is the third genre-specific category to be added at the VMAs in this century.’
Rema and Selena Gomez are the first-ever winners of the award in history. Congratulations to them!
