Mike Edwards winning his first pro boxing match via unanimous decision

It came as a surprise to everyone when the former BbNaija housemate, Mike Edwards, made the switch from being a reality TV star to jumping neck-deep into the merciless world of professional boxing. He shocked everyone in his debut match by securing a unanimous decision win against his opponent, Jake Cornish.

Mike Edwards who had always been athletic as a two-time Nigerian high jump champion stepped into the ring wielding a considerable height difference against the shorter Jake Cornish, who also happened to be a reality TV star on the seventh season of Love Island.

Frustrated with the massive height disadvantage, Cornish found himself getting dominated by Mike Edwards who possessed a longer arm range. For a moment, the Love Island star forgot about his preplanned boxing strategy as he started throwing impulsive overhand rights when Edwards’ well-timed punches kept landing cleanly on his face.

Sensing the loss of composure from his opponent, Mike Edwards displayed a solid ring IQ as he maintained enough distance, effectively using his long reach to keep Cornish at bay with straight, consistent jabs.

Cornish eventually landed a good shot on Edwards, but he failed to keep the momentum going. Edwards simply brushed off his attack as if it had no effect on his tall frame while continuing to use his reach to his advantage.

By the fourth round, Cornish went into survival mode as he couldn’t provide a decisive answer to the offensive attack Mike Edwards kept launching against him. Seeing his defeat staring him in the face, Cornish complained to the referee that Mike kept hitting him on the back of the head.

As the fight approached the late rounds, Mike Edwards slowed down a little as he seemed to have run out of gas. Cornish, on the other hand, kept clinching at Edwards as he barely managed to keep afloat.

However, Edwards had already laid a solid strategy at the beginning of the fight as he stayed out of range of Cornish’s punches while using his long reach to get in his punches whenever he could. In the end, the judges awarded Mike Edwards as the winner of the fight through a unanimous decision.

The fight was done in the Misfits Boxing Cruiserweight division in Dublin Arena and was organized by media personality, KSI. See what Mike Edwards had to say about his opponent below:
