Should a Man Lose His Job Over a Family Argument? Nigerians Want His Dismissal After Video of PWC Lawyer’s Dispute with Wife Surfaces

In today’s latest social media storm, a video clip has surfaced showing a heated argument between a Nigerian lawyer, Opeyemi Mabawonku, and his wife, Abiola. The clip has been receiving mixed reactions across the internet. Mabawonku, an employee of PwC Nigeria, is seen in the video exchanging fierce words with his wife, who has been identified as a former lead HR at one of Nigeria’s top fintech companies, Paystack.

The video, initially shared by influencer Oyindamola, quickly gained momentum on Twitter (now X), triggering intense conversations about domestic violence, professional responsibility, and what constitutes “grounds for dismissal.” As netizens weigh in, they are actively calling for him to be dismissed from his job. The reasoning? In their eyes, his behavior reflects poorly on the firm’s reputation, even if the incident happened in his private life.

My question goes thus: Do Mabawonku’s actions in his private life warrant him losing his job?
In the clip, Mabawonku argues with Abiola, referring to her as a “mad” and “foolish” woman in Yoruba. The argument escalates when Abiola mentions calling her father, and Mabawonku responds, “You are a bastard if you don’t call your father.” At one point, he tells their two young daughters to leave the room, then proceeds to throw objects at her in frustration, though he does not physically assault his wife.

My take is that while Mabawonku’s words were harsh, they fell short of physical violence. People argue in marriages; heated words are thrown around in every household. So, I think the emphasis on dismissing Mabawonku over a family argument is way too excessive. I think the video release is a deliberate act to sabotage his career, and we should know the intention of who released the clip online. And if they win and he loses his job, who will handle the ripple effects of that decision, who’ll shoulder the responsibility of catering for his children, feeding them, clothing them, and paying for their tuition?

I see this as nothing but a cry for social media justice. Should every personal dispute spill into one’s workplace?
