New Sect Of Terrorist Called Lakurawa Lures Youth With N1 Million to Join Their Ranks
In a disturbing turn of events, a new terrorist group known as Lakurawa is emerging in Nigeria, particularly in Sokoto State, offering a staggering N1 million to entice young men to join their ranks.
This recruitment strategy highlights the group’s aggressive approach to building a following amidst rising regional insecurity.According to reports from Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, the Lakurawa group has its roots in the Sahel region, infiltrating Nigeria after political instability in neighboring Niger.
Their ideology aligns with extremist beliefs similar to those of Boko Haram, raising alarms among security agencies and local communities alike. The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has declared nine suspected members wanted, indicating the seriousness of the threat posed by this group.
Major General Edward Buba has emphasized that Lakurawa’s emergence is directly linked to recent coups in Niger and Mali, which have disrupted military collaborations and allowed extremist elements to spread into Nigeria.
Local sources reveal that Lakurawa operates primarily within four local government areas: Binji, Gudu, Tangaza, and Silame. They are not just recruiting; they are also enforcing strict religious laws, demanding taxes, and compelling parents to marry off their daughters to group members.
This alarming trend reflects a shift from their initial portrayal as mere herders to a formidable terrorist organization.
What makes Lakurawa particularly dangerous is its ability to exploit vulnerable communities. Initially welcomed for driving away bandits, they have since imposed harsh rules and taxes, creating an environment of fear. Residents report that the group employs a mix of financial incentives and ideological manipulation to gain support, effectively coercing the youth into joining their cause.
The recruitment process is systematic. Young men are lured with promises of wealth and power, while those who resist face severe consequences. Reports suggest the group has gained significant traction, boasting over 1,000 members equipped with modern technology and weaponry.
