Christmas Tragedy: Ooni of Ife’s Ex-Wife Naomi Ogunwusi and Others Arrested After Ibadan Stampede Led To The Death of 35 Children
No Christmas season in Nigeria doesn’t come with its woes. Prophetess Naomi Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, has been arrested following a devastating stampede during a children’s Christmas party in Ibadan.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, has left 35 children dead and six critically injured.
The event, organized by Ogunwusi’s foundation, Wings (Women In Need Of Guidance and Support), was intended to be a festive celebration for over 5,000 children. However, reports indicate that more than 7,500 attendees showed up, leading to chaos and the stampede.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as children were trampled in the rush.The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. Alongside Ogunwusi, those detained include the school’s principal and several others involved in organizing the event.
Police spokesperson stated that investigations have been escalated to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department to ensure justice is served.
Governor Seyi Makinde expressed his condolences to the families affected by this heart-wrenching tragedy, emphasizing the need for heightened security measures at public events to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The police have assured residents that they will maintain a strong presence in the area to prevent any unrest following the incident.This heartbreaking event raises critical questions about safety protocols at large gatherings.
Despite assurances from Ogunwusi regarding safety measures for attendees, it appears that adequate preparations were not in place to handle the unexpectedly high turnout. The community is now grappling with grief as they mourn the loss of innocent lives during what was meant to be a joyful occasion.
