Online Popularity Does Not Translate To Talent – Signing Lil Frosh Was A Step Backwards For DMW
Inasmuch as DMW boss Davido is trying to help young artiste achieve their dreams, sometimes he ends up being just a people pleaser. The rather hesitated signing of online street rap sensation Lil Frosh was a step backwards.
Firstly, the artiste Lil Frosh has an online presence where most of his rather childish rap videos are loved by mostly sympathisers and not actual fans of good music. He isn’t matured lyrically as most of his lines are very limited to only a section of people and themes.
Secondly, he doesn’t posses any exceptional talent to match up already star studded DMW line up of Peruzzi, Mayorkun or Dremo that are doing exceptionally.
Furthermore, he doesn’t equally have what it takes for an award category to match the cadet ranks of new trailblazers like Rema, Fireboy, Joeboy or even Crayon. I obviously don’t think he can be even another Zlatan.
Just like Burna Boy said in one of his controversial post last year when he said ‘these kids think online figures means talent’ many thought he is taking shots at Wizkid or Davido but it was for some of these new kids. Record labels are lazy and don’t scout for good talent but rely on social media hypes to get record deals and regret later blaming the artiste for being unprofessional.
The industry these days is filled with clowns and the focus is online figures, views and trends and less preference given to talent, content and personality.
