Alas, Headies, the leading award body in Nigeria, released 2023 list of nominees. This year, Grammy-winning Burna Boy leads as the most nominated artist, with 10 nods. But who are the biggest snubs this year?
1. Wizkid
For the first time since 2011, Wizkid was snubbed as he got no single nomination in this year’s edition of Headies Awards. Despite releasing an album, ‘More Love, Less Ego’, late 2022, Wizkid couldn’t get a single nomination. To most Afrobeats listeners, including this writer, this is the most shocking snub in the 2023 Headies Awards nominations list. Wizkid, being the most awarded artist in Headies history, grabbing no nomination for the first time in his career is indeed very shocking!
2. Rema
Everybody knows about how Rema has taken Afrobeats to greater heights since the release of his chart-topping single ‘Calm Down’, released February 2022. ‘Calm Down’ unarguably is the biggest song in Africa and one of the biggest in the world. However, as big as the song is, it was snubbed in some categories in which it should have gotten nominated. ‘Calm Down’ is worth being nominated in categories such as Best Afrobeats single of the year, Best Recording of the Year, and Headies’ Viewers Choice. But it was snubbed. However, Rema still got 5 nominations including Artist of the Year and Best Male Artist.
3. Zinoleesky
Zinoleesky missing in the nomination list is a snub and a surprise at the same time. He had a good run last year — he released Grit & Lust EP and hit songs like ‘Personal’ and ‘Loving You’. He dropped a dope verse on Adekunle Gold’s ‘Party No Dey Stop’. However, he is not nominated anywhere this year. It is quite shocking!
4. Fireboy DML
Fireboy DML bagged only one nomination, but it is assumed that he deserved more. His hit song ‘Bandana’ (feat. Asake) was snubbed among the songs nominated for Best Collaboration of the Year. It’s really a snub and surprise!
5. MI Abaga
Legendary Nigerian rapper, MI was equally snubbed on the nomination list for this year’s Headies. His album ‘The Guy’ was ignored in the Best Rap Album category, despite being one of the most talked about rap albums in Nigeria last year.
