Published

on

Without a doubt Psquare and the Mohits made up of frontliners (D’banj, Wande Coal and Don Jazzy) made some of the biggest hits in the past decades. Which among the two do you think had more hit songs? Let’s take a look.

The music group “P-square” now defunct made of the twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye were arguably the biggest music duo ever produced in Nigeria. They started off As a dance group in the late 90’s and started off their music career around 2002 with most of their video directions and music productions were handled by their elder bro Jude Okoye.

They got massive fame in 2005 with the song “Bizzy body” off Get Squared album. They went on to get amazing hits such a “Do me”, “No one like you”,Personally”, “Alingo” etc.  They had over 6 studio albums overall with numerous awards to their name.

They were Often likened to American singer “Usher”, they had amazing dance choreography skills as well as hit making abilities. They ruled the Nigerian music scene for over 15 years till they finally parted ways after some serious issues in the year 2016.

They had electrifying energy and performances to be able to hold down any crowd in africa and across the world. The modern Music era cannot be complete without mentioning this duo.

Mohits started in 2004 but achieved success few years later. They burst into the scene in with D’banj and Don Jazzy and Wande Coal being fronliners. They came into an industry already dominated by Psquare and 2baba and were able to compete.

D’banj was able to break into the industry with in 2005 with “Tongolo” afterwards he went to produce smash hits “Ogbono Feli feli” “Kimon” “Suddenly” as well as the international hit “Oliver twist” amongst others. D’banj is regarded as the artist who paved the way for most of the acceptance of modern Afrobeats sound to the foreign market after he signed a deal With Sony Music as well as Kanye West‘s G.O.O.D Music.

He wasn’t alone in the commercial success of Mohits as Wande Coal came through with one of the best albums as at that time “Mushin2mohits” with classics such as “Olulofe”, “bumper to bumper” and others. Others in the label such as Dr. Sid and D’Prince were able to weather the storm to make hits as well. Obviously the biggest label to ever come out of Nigeria with the super creative Don Jazzy behind most of the hits.

The group members of Don Jazzy, D’banj, Wande Coal, Dr. Sid, Kayswitch, D’prince had a collaborative album in 2007 titled “Curriculum Vitae” which produced amazing tracks such as “booty call” “close to you”, “Pere” etc. This album was regarded by Pulse as the best album to come out of Nigeria within 1996-2009.

The group broke after D’banj left in 2012 to form DB Records after he got signed by Kanye West sometimes around 2011. Wande Coal left as well after a little rift with Jazzy. Don Jazzy went on rebrand the label and made it “Mavin Records” which is one of the top music label in Nigeria.

To be honest, Psquare as a group had a big name in terms of talent but the label “Square Records” was nothing compared to the combined dominance of “Mohits” as a label and brand.
